Over a lunch break in Pizza Express in 2016, we (Harry and Dom) decided to partner up and set up our own coaching programme - There was one rule, to inspire people to play tennis for life! BTA (Bringing Tennis Alive) Tennis Coaching was born. We wanted to create more opportunities for children and adults of all backgrounds to play tennis, diminishing the notion that you had to be rich to be good at tennis or achieve anything in tennis. Together we’ve been in and around tennis for 50+ years and we’ve learnt some lessons, both positive and negative when it comes to spending your hard-earned cash on a new racket. Remember this is based on our opinion and is only a guide to helping you make the right choice when it comes to tennis racket shopping. Pre-Covid, this process was a lot easier; you’d head down to your local tennis shop and demo a selection of new rackets until you found the one which felt amazing! Roll back to 1995, 11 year old Dom has his best friend Chris round for a play date on a cold Monday evening but he has to leave early because he has a tennis lesson. “Why don’t you come along?”, Chris asks casually as he’s about to leave. “Sure, why not” I reply as I run upstairs to get changed then quickly jump into Chris’ mums car as she’s about to leave for the tennis club. We arrive at Broxbourne Tennis Club. Weirdly I’d lived around Broxbourne my whole life and never knew this place existed (still a sentence I hear regularly to this day). I started playing tennis at my local primary school when I was eight years old and instantly loved it. My coach quickly noticed how naturally I picked up the game and suggested my parents get me more involved at a tennis club, that’s when my journey at Broxbourne Sports Club began. For the first year, I played in one group session a week, before adding private lessons and extra group sessions. Funnily enough, one of my group coaches back then was Dom! At the age of 11, I began competing in local tournaments an exciting step in my development.
