Raise your hand if you feel like tennis can be a never-ending puzzle where you can’t get the pieces to fit and there feels like there’s no end in sight??
Believe me, you’re not alone.
The problem is, you’re just rushing to finish the puzzle, except you don’t know what the ‘finish’ looks like. You’re clinging to an end goal but you don’t know what the goal is. The frustration comes from the not knowing and the constant second guessing yourself.
Here’s where the Turtle Theory comes in:
Turtles swim without a clear direction or visible destination, yet they still arrive where they need to be.
(Can you see where I’m going with this??)
What I’m really saying is:
You don’t always need a rigid plan or constant course-correction.
Progress can come from steady movement, not perfect direction.
Trusting instinct, environment, and momentum can be enough.
This is especially useful when the “map” isn’t visible yet.
The reason it’s the ‘Turtle’ Theory is that turtles are not fast, they don’t look purposeful, they are just persistent, efficient and anciently successful.
You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going to keep going.
Just like the turtle keeps swimming, you just keep tennis’ing. Keep hitting the court and keep hitting balls and see where it takes you. Don’t force it, just be persistent and keep moving.
Next time you find yourself getting frustrated or lost in your tennis journey, just think of that turtle.
We’re lucky to be part of a sport where there can be so much movement. Whether it’s a hit with a friend, a match with a rival or a lesson with your coach. Trust your instinct and let it take you on YOUR journey through tennis.
There is no ‘correct’ route through tennis. Everyone has their own personal relationship and journey through it, but like the turtle, make it a calm journey. Turn the sat nav off and just enjoy the ride.
Have a great week team
